Let’s work together for a cleaner port!
16 March 2022
In March, for the second year in a row, the Port of Nice will be holding an operation to clean its waters. Around forty volunteers will be getting involved, of which around ten divers from ANAO and Bleu Gorgone.
Removing waste that has accumulated in the water
Next 26 March, the Port of Nice is arranging a morning to its waters. Launched by the Port’s teams, this operation will be carried out in partnership with La Mouette (who bring together the port’s pointu-style fishing boats), ANAO and Bleu Gorgone – organisations that carry out environmental protection missions and archaeological excavations. Around forty volunteers will be getting involved, of which around ten divers from ANAO and Bleu Gorgone.
A human chain
The morning will consist of several stages. After marking out the secured perimeter for the mission with buoys and the Port’s technical service barge, the divers will head into the Port’s water to collect waste from landing area M and will continue up to the area between landing areas E and F, where bulky waste has been detected. A human chain will then be implemented to collect the nets filled by the divers, and the bulkier waste with hooks, to then discharge them on a sheet placed on the slipway. The waste will then be sorted by type (plastic, cans, glass and so on) and processed by a subcontractor. Any living organisms will be released back into the sea.
A long-term commitment
Registered under the ISO 14001 certification that the Port of Nice gained in 2008, this event follows several others that have already taken place : awareness-raising amongst teams of environmental risks, procurement of anti-pollution equipment, water quality checks, etc. This commitment is proof of the Port’s determination to reduce its environmental impact by orientating its management around this crucial issue.
