No ifs and butts at Port of Nice

30 August 2022

Several solutions for collecting cigarette butts have been set up in the port area to make sure this waste is not thrown into the port and does not end up in the sea.

Did you know that a single cigarette butt pollutes up to 500 litres of water if it is not collected and treated?

That’s where the ingenious idea championed by TchaoMegot comes into play: recycle the material inside the butts (after washing) to make insulation for the construction or textile industry.

Port of Nice – won over by this approach – decided to set up several solutions for collecting cigarette butts around the basin. As a result, six new ashtrays were installed over the summer by TchaoMegot around the Lympia basin.

Protecting the environment and making the port area cleaner

Aimed at port users, this service has a dual goal: firstly, to help protect the environment by taking concrete action to decontaminate and 100%-recycle a form of toxic waste, and secondly, to clean up the port areas.

Teams from the port, pleasure boaters and visitors are all invited to use the new ashtrays as intended to support the port as it pursues its environmental objectives.
